Identity Theft

On May 10, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office arrested Steven Jason Congleton, DOB:  1/24/1974, of 4241 Willow Drive in Ayden after an investigation revealed that he had stolen a social security number to apply for 18 or more credit cards.

Suspicion began when the victim received a letter from one of the credit cards companies because of a discrepancy in his address.  A credit report revealed that the applications for the credit cards had taken place between March 26 and April 11.  No charges were made on any of the cards.

The investigation into how he obtained the social security number is ongoing.

Already on a pre-trial release for Identity Theft in Pitt County in September, 2011, Congleton is now charged with 18 counts of Identity Theft; and 18 counts of Attempt to Obtaining Property by False Pretense for this incidence.  He remains in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond.
